I saw the production this past week. PACIFIC OVERTURES is far from my favorite Sondheim show, but this production makes the most of what is there. Clever use of puppetry, sword fights, and yes, that six-foot drum. Best of all was the production design, with a modified thrust stage and turntable, and lighting effects surrounding the entire auditorium.
