Running time on opening night in New York was probably just about exactly three hours or a tad less, including intermission, but if anyone reported on the exact running time, I have not come across it.
On opening night in Toronto, running time is known to have been around three-and-a-half hours. We know this because it was reported on at the time. Lerner later wrote that it was four-and-a-half hours. He may have misremembered partly because the show started 20 minutes on that first night, but even considering that, it is still a decided exaggeration. He seems to have thought it both started earlier and ended later than it did.
Three-and-a-half hours was not all that long for the first performance of a musical out of town at that time.
