An example of what I'm talking about, in terms of recognition/things not travelling across borders:
Every time I see Assassins discussed online I see Americans arguing that Something Just Broke is unnecessary, that it stops the show dead in its tracks. For an American audience that might very well be true - it's your history, you probably don't need to spend four minutes watching a number that explains what a shattering impact Kennedy's assassination had. You just *know*, because even if you weren't alive in 1963 you grew up with stories about what that moment meant. The song was added for a production *in London*, and the show portrays your history, not ours. The explanation that song provides is probably more necessary here than it would be in a production on your side of the Atlantic. |
