But producers definitely don't "approve everything"... and they are usually, in my experience, even less aware of what the audience sees from different places in the house than the director or designers (who are hired to think about that). We may have very different experience with Broadway producers, but I have worked on quite a few broadway productions and I've never seen a producers that hands on, even at the major non-profits.
