You make a very good point.
BILLY ELLIOT, BLOOD BROTHERS and LONDON ROAD, unlike the show in question, managed to draw audiences (British or not) into the story and boy, did those shows 'resonate'. The subject matter/context beneath each of them came through loud and clear thanks to brilliant writing and crafty direction. You didn't have to have a background as a coal miner in the 80's, a 'Scouser' or a resident of Ipswich to be moved by the material.
I wish 'SKY'S EDGE' had managed that trick - I didn't go in wanting to NOT like it. But I am glad The National has a hit and hopefully they can run it again next season (as they did with FOLLIES when it was a hot ticket) and make a decent profit. |
