It is a show. It is the business of show aka show business and the noun is derived from the verb. The alternative is tell.
And I get great joy from shows about very serious subjects so to me it is entirely apt.
Your other gripe is not really theatre related but it seems to betray a resistance to the evolving nature of language.
I am sure there are many expressions in your lexicom that are not meant to be taken literally.
