Yes, I agree that he was not at his best. I thought of him because I haven't seen him do a solo song in what seems like a very long time, and I wish I could see more showcases for him.
I didn't think Donna Murphy was at her best, either, although I think she is also generally fantastic. Like with Meryl Streep, I think you can sometimes see her wheels turning, which didn't fit this madcap character. In fairness to Murphy, the reduced rehearsal time didn't help, I'm sure. I also didn't like her heavy white makeup, which I thought was distracting. |
