Grease Live is a production Paramount did for FOX, so it's based on the movie (which Paramount owns) and not on the stage play. It's not a 100% re-enactment of the movie but it's a fairly close remake with some additions and drops. Mainly, the four hits written for the movie (Grease is The Word, Sandy, Hopelessly Devoted and You're the One That I Want) are all there. Rise of the Pink Ladies - the upcoming Paramount+ musical series - is also heavily based on the movie in terms of look, design and script. And it looks like they're including the Grease is the Word song, at the very least. Grease stage productions based on the movie started in 1993 with the west-end revival and have become more common since then. The 1994 Broadway revival didn't include the movie songs, but the 2008 did. It's hard to think of any production, moving forward, with commercial aspirations that won't utilize these songs. For most people, that's what Grease is mainly about. |
