The pendulum has swung back with The Sound of Music. I have not heard of a production in a very long time that did not include the Elsa-Max songs. Some productions include "I Have Confidence," which is an official option, but it is hard to make it work onstage and my experience is that not all productions include it. What is true that "Something Good" almost always replaces "Ordinary Couple," which is also an official option. Otherwise, my perception from reading reviews of productions in various places is that productions stick with the original. For one thing, they can get in trouble if they don't.
It is true that the first big London revival and the sole commercial Broadway revival made drastic changes to bring them closer to the film, but that day seems to be over. And even the London one did include "How Can Love Survive?", and the Broadway one included both Elsa-Max songs, while admittedly some drastic changes were made elsewhere. |
