Well - I think another major problem is that this isn't truly Bob Fosse's Dancin', it's a new concoction which is really Wayne Cilento's Dancin'. Now, I have nothing against the formidable Mr. Cilento (who among other things will forever be Mike in A Chorus Line for me), but this feels like it was more an attempt to do another Fosse and capitalize on the success of that revue, instead of really being a true revival of Dancin'.
And, ya know, the dancing in Fosse was wonderful, and it was a great tribute to the man and his artistry. But after a while, I felt it was the same thing over and over. This is the problem with revues like this in general, as opposed to book shows where the dancing is more spread out and relates to the scenework. This kind of show is much much harder to make work well. |
