Back in the twelfth century, King Henry II commanded this fellow named George (whose professional name was Roland the Farter) to perform, at every Christmas, “unum saltum et siffletum et unum bumbulum.” That is, “a leap, a whistle, and a fart.” In exchange for this duty to his feudal overlord, George/Roland the jester got a manor and thirty acres in Suffolk.
