''Cabaret'' is Cliff's story. It's Isherwood's Berlin seen through his eyes, but it's got to be one of the most thankless leading-man roles around.
In the 1966 original, Cliff had at least a solo (''Why Should I Wake Up?''); nowadays, he has no solo and only has half of ''Perfectly Marvelous.''
As the years pass, Sally and the Emcee seem to get more songs to sing, while Cliff's role shrinks ever more. I pity the actor who has to play him. |
