You make a good point that I didn't about trust (especially) on Broadway. It has always been a major characteristic and still is to a degree that would shock an onlooker. No matter what contracts say, they can't prevent someone from trusting.
There are always stories about weird things that can't happen but do, usually at inconvenient times, because someone trusted someone else that "we are all on the same page." But it happens, just as it did here, though this one sounds extreme. The article in the Times about this one makes it clear that, at this point at least, there is no love lost or trust remaining between Gehan and the remaining producers.
