I saw today's matinee and while I may agree with most of what you say about the show Sergius, I think the wonderful Donna Murphy (and who better to play that part today) was well supported by an able cast especially Ann Harada (who can make me see an invisible dog) and Andrea Burns. Too, Kody Jauron was wonderful as the Artiste, a little bit of mime but mostly excellent and exhuberent dance. The young lovers Phillip Johnson Richardson and Samantha Williams made me care very much about what happened to them andWilliams' song "I've Never Said I Loved You" thrilled. The set was evocative but simple, the costumes marvelous and Mary-Mitchell Campbell showed the Encores series is musically in superb hands. This show , as many have said, returns Encores to its original mission showcasing a deserving score in an otherwise flawed show which is not likely to get a full revival. Thank you, Encores. |
