I don't think Jacobi is saying we need to go back to his era. I think he is talking about the use of the human voice to create character and emotion through texture, color and pitch. That can still be done using the advantages of amplification but not if the idea of vocal technique in acting continues to be seen as old fashioned or something incompatible with contemporary technology.
It is an interesting problem. When I see performances by someone like John Douglas Thompson I'm aware that I'm listening to his voice as much as watching him act. I'd love to see and hear more of that double-pleasure in theater. |
