Dear World was soooo much fun. I had a fantastic time and am so glad I saw it.

Yes it’s odd and idiosyncratic, a bit heavy handed, and has book problems ~ but it was just so well done.

- Donna Murphy was marvelous. Funny, with great heart, soaring vocals, looking incredible. She really is one of our finest singing actors and a Broadway treasure.

- Ann Harada was so funny, I thought I was going to wet myself. Her on-going bit with the dog was hysterical. Her comedic timing is laser sharp.

- The orchestra sounded superb. And that score! Jerry Herman has a way with a melody. I had forgotten what a gorgeous song “I Don’t Want to Know” is. Just beautiful, maybe among his very best.

All in all a terrific night at City Center and a feather in Encore’s cap. I don’t think we will ever see a full scale revival of Dear World, so I am thrilled to have seen this. It’s too odd and messy to have mass appeal. It’s interesting, though, to see this grand dame character (Countess Aurelia) who shares elements of the eccentric grand dames in other Herman musicals (Dolly and Mame) in particular.
