Billy Porter was under contract with A&M Records at the time, and they would not release him to record the album. Billy has said in subsequent interviews that the label was marketing him as an R&B/pop singer and didn't want him associated with musical theater. He was ultimately dropped after recording one solo album, and the rest is history.
