I think Ray Walston approached it as an actor, and it helped turn him into a Broadway star, before doing the film version and more films like "The Apartment", "South Pacific" and "Kiss Me Stupid" and tv stardom on "My Favorite Martian". I believe he really knew the vaudevillian style that put over his big song though. Lewis and Hayes were already stars with over the top personas baked in to what an audience might expect from them -- and they were good. Garber was all right, but more of a leading man a bit at sea (had to put in a "Titanic" reference, pardon) doing what's more a leading character/comedian role. |
