Seems to me that the 2000's have become the "I was distracted by" era. (Whether it be something in the audience, onstage, or even perhaps down the block.) In all my years of theatregoing when I was younger, the whole "I was distracted by" concept just didn't seem to be a thing. Maybe I was too distracted by the performances to notice that anything else was going on. :-) It's a concert, not a full theatrical presentation, hence no need to suspend disbelief. (Though I would definitely call it a SHOW.) I trust the orchestra musicians all had music in front of them. Distracting? I've seen plenty of concert presentations (and of course literal "readings") with books in hand, music stands, what have you. Eventually, they will be done with tablets in hand, no paper. I also learned my lesson in a 9th grade choir concert when I had the piece we were singing (portions of the Vivaldi "Gloria") memorized and I chose not to use my music, even though everyone else in the chorus held their music, memorized or not. I didn't think it would matter, and I don't think a "use your music" protocol was ever stated. But it turns out I unwittingly stole focus the entire time. Believe me, I never did that again. :-) But I maintain that's still a very different thing than having the star of the show, who's been out of rehearsals due to Covid, using a script for a concert presentation, even if no one else was. I think Murphy had the right to hold a script if she needed it. Just to make that clear. |
