When I was in Encores, with only 10 days of rehearsal, the AEA contract required books in hand. I had a music book in my hand or on a stand for 80% of the show. I’m not aware it has changed. I’m pretty sure it’s still in the contract. The actors just memorize anyway but AEA tries to protect us.
