This reminds me of what happened with the NY Times review of SWEET CHARITY. For better or worse, the reviewer took Shirley MacLaine to task for failing to live up to the memory of Gwen Verdon’s onstage performance. When you see Ms MacLaine in the film now, she seems perfectly acceptable: the slightly slow-witted girl who has no sexual boundaries and no real understanding of what a relationship can be? Perfectly cast. Very real and very touching.
Just as Roz was fine as Madame Rose. So was Shirley fine as Charity. |
