Union folk will correct me, but back in the day, I believe the scripts-in-hand presentation was a stipulation of the limited AEA contract (used to be an issue with staged readings of plays that allowed some rehearsals; memorization was not required and could not be demanded). I can recall many, including Chenoweth, one of the most prepared singing actors in the business, clutching hers during the Encores! On a Clear Day. Ditto, famously with the flu, Ebersole in Applause.
