That was my impression as well, that it was a union requirement that everyone carry scripts. Seth Rudetsky in the link above says that it's a licensing issue, that the fee is less if it's a reading. In any event, it was only maybe 10-15 years ago that Encores stopped having every single actor carry the script throughout the show. I sympathize with the OP's feeling that, in the ideal world, it would have been nice if Murphy didn't have a script in hand. But I think it's also true that Encores expectations for actors have risen dramatically over those 10-15 years, with memorization/costume changes/detailed choreography/etc. It's a huge amount of work for presumably not-so-great pay for a short run, and if those expectations are not fulfilled to the audience's satisfaction, the actor gets flak about it. Murphy is 64 years old; not speaking about her specifically, but for anyone in their sixties to memorize an entire show is not a trivial task. Someone said once that the star power in Encores has gone down over time because they are having trouble getting major stars to take on the increased requirements. I would have preferred Murphy not carry a script, but I would rather have Murphy carrying a script than almost anyone else in that role. It's hard to put the genie back in the bottle, but I wonder if Encores could do a bit of a reset and go back to basics. If they could increase star power accordingly, ticket sales might not be hurt too much. |
