I always thought Judy Garland would have been an absolutely amazing Rose; her mother was pretty darn much the real thing. Leroy had worked with young Judy, maybe she wouldn't have been as combative with him as with her other directors in that time period. I have no doubt that she would have been spectacular. I do wonder about Merman, if she was capable of reigning in it for the camera to that degree. I wouldn't have thought Elizabeth Taylor could pull off Martha in Virginia Woolf, but she clearly trusted her director Mike Nichols and went there. Not sure Leroy could have done that with Merman--It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is the same year and there is nothing toned down about Merman's performance in that. (Granted, completely different role and tone of project.) |
