| For a second, I secretly wondered if ''Funny Girl'' had cast Paolo Montalban to fill in as Nicky Arnstein while Ramin Karimloo is doing ''Phantom'' in Italy (June 27-July 17). But no, Montalban is playing Flo Ziegfeld. Alas, Ziegfeld is a non-singing role, so we'll miss Montalban's beautiful voice. As a rare Asian-American leading man, Montalban deserved to have more Broadway opportunities than he's been given. In 1996, he made his Broadway debut as Lun Tha in ''The King and I.'' Then he got a big break: playing Prince Christopher in the 1997 Disney TV movie of ''Cinderella,'' co-starring Brandy and Whoopi Goldberg. It was a giant ratings hit, and aired to over 60 million viewers. As a result of the exposure, he was named one of People magazine's ''Most Beautiful People of 1998.'' Surely, ''Cinderella'' would lead to more leading-man roles, right? Well, that was over 25 years ago, and Montalban's only two Broadway gigs since have been playing Manjiro in the 2004 revival of ''Pacific Overtures'' and playing ''Rusty's Servant'' in the 2013 flop play of ''Breakfast at Tiffany's.'' What a shame he didn't star in the 2015 revival of ''The King and I.'' Anyway, he's done a lot of regional theater. (And he was a highlight at our 2009 ''Leading Men'' benefit for Broadway Cares at Birdland.) I'm glad he's coming back to Broadway, but I hope the recent mini-boom in Asian-American films and TV series offer him the type of roles he richly deserves. |
