I think Garber's voice at the time was slightly off in terms of style -- he sounded a bit like he was still singing Broadway pop songs from "Godspell", while Groenendaal was quite legit, and to me, he sounded more tenor-ish in timbre (and was much more satisfying vocally in the role).
