I can’t speak to this specific cast but posts like this are fascinating as they always say more about the individual poster than whatever it is they’re talking about. It’s you who’s applying the stereotypes here.
I have no doubt that if the show had been cast with for example an Black actress in the Kathy Bates role you would have said she was a cliched black drunk housewife, if a Latina actress had been cast as the sassy girl you would’ve said that fell into predictable stereotypes from West Side Story to In the Heights, if a non-binary or trans performer had been cast as the leader of the group who becomes a gym teacher you would have claimed that plays into hackneyed types of sexual preference, etc and on and on. (It’s also interesting you claim you were “looking forward to this” and yet it’s your one and only post on a theater board where you could’ve commented on hundreds of other shows or topics whether you were supposedly looking forward to it or not.)
Either way the play Vanities – which has already been done with diverse casting for decades – is one of the most performed over the last 50 years for a reason. The characters are universal and timeless; from this post it would appear it’s you who’s not. |
