George Steinbrenner liked hearing Sinatra sing the lyric: “King of the hill … top of the heap … A-number-1 … top of the list …
“THAT’S US!” Steinbrenner exclaimed. “THAT’S THE YANKEES!!!” ... So ''New York, New York'' played after Yankees games.
For a short time, Sinatra's recording was played after Yankee wins and Minnelli's version was played after Yankee losses.
But Steinbrenner was a fan of Sinatra AND Minnelli, so that tradition was short-lived. |
