Due too overwhelming popular demand, the longest running musical in Broadway history will extend its record-breaking run for 20 additional weeks. The final performance will take place at the Majestic Theatre on Sunday evening, September 3.

Conceivably this could be true, so I don't get the joke.

I heard from a source that they are going to open it again sometime in the fall/winter when they can find a proper theatre that would fit the show when some of the shows that just opened closes. They in the meantime are looking for someone to play the Phantom and Christine. They would like to bring back some of the original performers like Judy Kaye as Carlotta. The show will be downsized a little.

Original performers at this point? I think Judy Kaye would be the first person to say that she can no longer sing Carlotta.

Maybe they’ll rename the show “Bad Phantom”

Or they could do the sequel, "Paint Never Dries."

If it were extending it would have been done weeks ago

There’s only two weeks left which wouldn’t really give a lot of time to get ticket sales for the end of April plus the actor/staff contracts would need to be extended and word would have leaked out by now.

An official announcement on this scale would be longer than three sentences long.

Someone will set up a booth selling Carol Channing Corn. The bathroom stalls will have framed posters on every side saying "When did I eat corn?"

And it probably wouldn’t have misspelled the second word in the announcement, though you never know.

Steam whistles gathered in numbers outside the Lunt-Fontanne today to protest for greater employment opportunities.

"There are not many great parts for factory whistles," tooted their chief representative, "And we feel the loss of every chance to terrify an audience."

"God, I'm a whistle," insisted Cassie, who used to star but had decided to try for a minor chorus part, "A whistle whistles! ... All I ever needed/ was a Sweeney / And a fact'ry / And the dream / To scream / For you!"

Representatives of the show dismissed the protest. "They're just letting off steam," said a spokesperson.
