| Hey, ATC. I've got 2-3 slots to fill on a quick work trip to NY later this month. Here's what I'm currently deciding between... SUMMER, 1976: I know this hasn't started performances yet. By the time I arrive, it will have had two weeks of performances. More importantly, it will be hard to pass up my first opportunity to see Laura Linney on stage. I'm a huge fan of her TV and film work. WHITE GIRL IN DANGER (Vineyard/Second Stage): I liked A Strange Loop (though I found the book much stronger than the score) THE WIFE OF WILLESDEN: (BAM) I know nothing of Chaucer, but Zadie Smith is one of my favorite novelists, so I'm intrigued to see her theatrical debut. PUBLIC OBSCENITIES (Soho Rep): The themes and subject matter are very interesting to me. Strong reviews, too. THE THANKSGIVING PLAY: Two friends whose taste I generally trust had widely differing opinions on this one. I love sharp satire. Does this one live up to its promise? REGRETFULLY, SO THE BIRDS ARE (Playwrights Horizons): The premise sounds intriguing (and funny?) It doesn't appear to have much buzz. Anyone seen it? PICTURES FROM HOME: It seems like the general reaction has been muted. I've never seen Nathan on stage, if you can believe it (though I've seen taped performances, like The Nance) LEOPOLDSTADT: I was thinking of saving this for a later trip in June, but if the seating charts for upcoming performances are anything to go by, the play is not selling well anymore and perhaps it won't last until early summer? LIFE OF PI: I remember enjoying the novel and being rather cool to Ang Lee's film adaptation. This may be reductive, but this production looks very 'War Horse' to me -- a play I admired (for its theatricality and puppetry) more than I loved. GOODNIGHT, OSCAR: Doesn't start performances until April 7, but did anyone see it in Chicago? I would also like to see SWEENEY TODD, but there are only wildly overpriced premium and resell Orchestra and Front Mez tickets available for my slots. I'm not paying $300-600 to see Groban croon his way up and down Fleet Street. That one will have to wait for a future visit. ..any recommendations? |
