I think some folks here know that I was Charles' archivist, and assistant and even lived with him for a year. We still chat now and then, but sadly his wife Barbara recently passed and I'm not sure how that's affected Charles. I haven't spoken to Lee in quite a while now, but he was always sharp as a tack whenever he'd call to talk to Buddy.
And we know Chita and Dick are LITERALLY still kicking!
It's remarkable, isn't it? With them - and Kander and Harnick, we're watching the end of a golden age. It will be a devastating loss when they're all gone, but goodness, the legacy they created.
And three cheers for Buddy Strouse - one of Broadway's most adaptable composers, who has written so many different scores with different and equally extraordinary sounds. |
