Alex Newell - Tony Chances

How is this not a Tony Award winning performance?

I've seen it twice in person, and even the video makes we want to stand up and cheer.

This is a performance that will stand the test of time.

I'd rather poke my eyes out than watch Glee or Zoe's... Playlist, so I was not familiar with Alex Newell. What a talent! What a voice.

Alex is so fabulous in this show. I’m curious to see what the Tony nominators decide in terms of their category.

She’s great. Where did she come from? I’d never heard of her. Also- does Kevin Cahoon have a chance at a nomination? I haven’t seen the show yet. Is it a showy role?

Kevin Cahoon?

Newell has done some TV and was (wonderful) in the recent Once on This Island revival production.

And had a pretty big club hit with Kill The Lights. A fanatic dance tune in the disco genre. Link below.

Newell's "Mama Will Provide" was a major highlight in an overall terrific production.

Newell has had quite a notable TV career so far, as a major character in several seasons of Glee, coming from The Glee Project or whatever that spin-off casting show was... and being one of the lead characters in the musical TV series Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, which ran for 2 seasons on NBC recently.

Like J Harrison Ghee, Newell has the dilemma of which category in whihc to be nominated. I believe that Ghee has already stated they will accept a nomination in the Best Actor category but I may not be remembering correctly (I don't thein the Tony Committee made a statement on this.) I don't know in which category Newell will be placed. I do know for the one award prediously for which they received a nomination (for Zooey's Extraordinary Playlist) they were in the Best Supporting Actor category so I think they again may be placed in the Actor catefory again which might mean there would be two gender non conforming performers competing in that category. Of course one could be placed in a supporting catefory.

I haven't seen Shucked. Who are the leads? The website lists 7 actors in alphabetical order, then the 12 ensemble members in alphabetical order.

As Chazwaza said below, I believe Newell has said in the past that he is fine with he/him, so I think he will be considered for the Actor categories. I noticed that the two understudies for his role seem to be women from their photos and bios. Is Newell playing a character who is considered to be a woman within the world of the show?

It’s very much an ensemble show, but narratively, the leads are Caroline Innerbichler, Andrew Durand, and John Behlman.

Newell plays a cis-woman.

Well, I am pretty sure that Newell goes by he/him, in addition to she/her and they/them. It seems like for Newell it's not as much a rejection of any gender identity or pronoun other than the one he uses, but a fluidity of personal presentation of gender and embracing of all pronouns/identities.

But I can't speak to it, I don't know Alex personally.

I don't know Alex personally either but I have read that they use all pronouns and yes, they identify as gender fluid to the best of my knowledge.

One good-bad thing about Shucked is that the two standout songs and performances - this song and "Somebody Will" - arrive in a one-two punch, one right after the other, but no later songs really match their quality in my opinion. Still well worth the ticket to see them.
