Will "Kimberly Akimbo" or "& Juliet" help their Broadway houses to finally earn a special Tony Award distinction?
Posted by: WeillFan 05:18 pm EDT 04/03/23

If “Kimberly Akimbo” or "& Juliet" win the top Tony Award this season, either the Booth Theatre or the Stephen Sondheim Theatre will respectively join the ranks of legit houses that have hosted the Broadway debut of a Best Musical winner. Last season, "A Strange Loop" won the Tony Award for Best Musical and helped the Lyceum Theatre to finally earn this distinction.

Just for fun, I thought about the legit houses that have yet to host an original Broadway run of a Tony Award-winning Best Musical. I'm not including plays, musical revivals or Broadway-to-Broadway transfers in this list. If I made a mistake, please respond with a correction.

Ambassador Theatre
American Airlines Theatre (formerly Selwyn)
Belasco Theatre (formerly Stuyvesant)
Booth Theatre
Helen Hayes Theatre (formerly Little)
Hudson Theatre
James Earl Jones Theatre (formerly Cort)
Lena Horne Theatre (formerly Brooks Atkinson)
Lyric Theatre (formerly Ford Center/Hilton/Foxwoods)
Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (formerly Biltmore)
Stephen Sondheim Theatre (formerly Henry Miller's)
Studio 54 (formerly New Yorker Theatre/Gallo Opera House)

And this is a list I compiled of Broadway houses that have hosted the debuts of new, Tony Award-winning Best Musicals. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, does not include Broadway-to-Broadway transfers and does not include demolished or decommissioned venues:

Al Hirschfeld Theatre (formally Martin Beck): “Moulin Rouge!” “Kinky Boots,” “Hallelujah, Baby!” “Bye Bye Birdie”
August Wilson Theatre (formally Virginia): “Jersey Boys,” “City of Angels”
Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (formerly Royale): “Once”
Broadhurst Theatre: “Fosse,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “Cabaret,” “Fiorello!”
Broadway Theatre: “Les Miserables,” “Evita”
Circle in the Square Theatre: “Fun Home”
Ethel Barrymore Theatre: “The Band's Visit”
Eugene O'Neill Theatre: “The Book of Mormon,” “Spring Awakening,” “Big River”
Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre (formerly Plymouth): “Passion”
Gershwin Theatre (formerly Uris): “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”
Imperial Theatre: “Billy Elliot,” “Jerome Robbins' Broadway,” “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” “Fiddler on the Roof”
John Golden Theatre: “Avenue Q”
Longacre Theatre: “Ain't Misbehavin'”
Lunt-Fontanne Theatre: “Titanic,” “The Sound of Music”
Lyceum Theatre: “A Strange Loop”
Majestic Theatre: “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Wiz,” “The Music Man,” “South Pacific”
Marquis Theatre: “Thoroughly Modern Millie”
Minskoff Theatre: “Sunset Blvd.”
Music Box Theatre: “Dear Evan Hansen”
Nederlander Theatre: “Rent”
Neil Simon Theatre (formerly Alvin): “Hairspray,” “Annie,” “Company,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”
New Amsterdam Theatre: “The Lion King”
Palace Theatre: “The Will Rogers Follies,” “La Cage aux Folles,” “Applause”
Richard Rodgers Theatre (formerly 46th St.): “Hamilton,” “In the Heights,” “Nine,” “Raisin,” “1776,” “How to Succeed Without Really Trying,” “Redhead,” “Damn Yankees,” “Guys and Dolls”
Shubert Theatre: “Memphis,” “Spamalot,” “Crazy for You,” “A Chorus Line,” “A Little Night Music”
St. James Theatre: “The Producers,” “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” “Hello, Dolly!” “The Pajama Game,” “The King and I”
Vivian Beaumont Theatre: “Contact”

Noteworthy that the Richard Rodgers Theatre has hosted the most original Best Musical Tony Award Winners with a total of nine.

Amazing list! I thought for a second that you forgot "Next to Normal" at the Booth, but it was "Billy Elliott" that won Best Musical that year. The Booth should've earned the distinction the year of "Once on This Island." Crazy that "Will Rogers Follies" won.

Here's a partial list of Tony Award-winning Best Musicals that debuted in houses that are no longer considered to be Broadway venues, or no longer exist. These figures are all from the Internet Broadway Database:

"Man of La Mancha" debuted in 1965 and was the final show to play the ANTA Washington Square Theatre, 40 W. 4th St. "Man of La Mancha" later transferred to the Martin Beck Theatre (now Al Hirschfeld) in 1968, and the musical played other venues like the Eden Theatre and the Mark Hellinger Theatre before concluding its original run in 1971.

"My Fair Lady" debuted in 1956 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre at 1655 Broadway & 237 W. 51st St. "My Fair Lady" would also include transfers to the Broadhurst Theatre and Broadway Theatre to finish its original run in 1962. The Nederlanders closed the Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1989, which then became the Times Square Church.

"Kismet" debuted in 1953 at the Ziegfeld Theatre at 6th Avenue at W. 54th St. The venue closed in 1965 and was demolished the following year. "Show Boat" (1927), Noel Coward's "Bittersweet" (1929), "Brigadoon" (1947) and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1949) are a few other notable musicals that debuted at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

"Kiss Me, Kate" debuted in 1948 at the New Century Theatre at 932 N. Seventh Ave. (at 58th Street), later transferring to the Shubert Theatre for its final season on Broadway from 1950-51. The New Century Theatre closed in 1954 and was demolished in 1962.

Thank you for taking the time to assemble this information. Interesting reading.

Perhaps the new Museum of Broadway could incorporate it in one of their exhibit rooms.

Again - thanks for doing it!

WeillFan, I just wanted to add to the thanks from others about your posting these messages. Really fascinating how some theaters have housed a lot of Tony winners and others have only housed zero or one.
