Like J Harrison Ghee, Newell has the dilemma of which category in whihc to be nominated. I believe that Ghee has already stated they will accept a nomination in the Best Actor category but I may not be remembering correctly (I don't thein the Tony Committee made a statement on this.) I don't know in which category Newell will be placed. I do know for the one award prediously for which they received a nomination (for Zooey's Extraordinary Playlist) they were in the Best Supporting Actor category so I think they again may be placed in the Actor catefory again which might mean there would be two gender non conforming performers competing in that category. Of course one could be placed in a supporting catefory.

I haven't seen Shucked. Who are the leads? The website lists 7 actors in alphabetical order, then the 12 ensemble members in alphabetical order.

As Chazwaza said below, I believe Newell has said in the past that he is fine with he/him, so I think he will be considered for the Actor categories. I noticed that the two understudies for his role seem to be women from their photos and bios. Is Newell playing a character who is considered to be a woman within the world of the show?

It’s very much an ensemble show, but narratively, the leads are Caroline Innerbichler, Andrew Durand, and John Behlman.

Newell plays a cis-woman.

Well, I am pretty sure that Newell goes by he/him, in addition to she/her and they/them. It seems like for Newell it's not as much a rejection of any gender identity or pronoun other than the one he uses, but a fluidity of personal presentation of gender and embracing of all pronouns/identities.

But I can't speak to it, I don't know Alex personally.

I don't know Alex personally either but I have read that they use all pronouns and yes, they identify as gender fluid to the best of my knowledge.
