I think it is less true of plays than musicals that voters feel the need to award still running shows.
On Follies day, however, I will mention, as I have before, that I think one reason why Two Gentlemen won is because any voter who read Variety knew Follies would soon be closing. So even though it was still running, that knowledge may have affected at least a few votes, and that may have been all that was necessary.
But when it comes to plays, so often few of the nominated plays both among revivals and new plays, are still running. And the prevalence in recent times of genuinely limited runs for plays has also affected things. |
