Colbert's always been a theater lover. As a young man, he went to Northwestern and originally studied to be a dramatic actor.
Colbert's plugged many Broadway shows on his program. (And he played Harry in the 2011 ''Company'' concert version at Avery Fisher.)
And he booked his hero, Stephen Sondheim, on his ''Late Show'' for what would be only a couple of months before his passing at age 91.
Regardless of whether ''New York, New York'' is good or not, I'd applaud Colbert for recognizing John Kander, at 96, for his new musical.
Kander's Broadway legacy and his desire to keeping working, especially in his 90s, deserve the airtime and respect he's rightfully getting. |
