I saw the original production. My response to it was largely positive though a bit mixed. It would probably have helped for it to have been the first Shepard play I'd seen, because some of it felt like territory he had covered more strikingly in earlier plays. That said, there were many powerful scenes and its cast could not have been bettered.
At one point during its preview period Ann Wedgeworth became ill and, since they had no scenes together, Geraldine Page played both of their roles, Ann's with book in hand. Everyone was on the night I saw it, however. |
