Here's another take from the BBC. Apparently PEN International is partnering with McDonagh for his revival of "The Pillowman". I don't know if I'd put McDonagh's plays in the same category of endangered speech as Salmon Rushdie or even Roald Dahl. Still I think it's a nice move on PEN International's part. Even though the "other side" is doing nauseating things like banning text books in Florida that they claim make white children feel guilty about America's enslavement of Africans, "our side" still needs to do a lot more work on what free speech means for artists and civil society otherwise we're just fighting for a negative mirror-image of fascism. It's a tricky business because the fascists have appropriated the cause of free speech from the progressives.
