The Cherry Orchard – Goodman Theater- Highly recommend

Robert Falls has directed a beautiful production. The entire cast is excellent and expertly navigates the quick shifts between comic and tragic.

Kate Fry as Lyubov Ranevskaya has a madcap, yet tragic quality that sets the tone for the entire show.

The themes are timeless and seem particularly relevant at the moment, particularly the exploration of wealth and poverty.

I’ve admired Falls works since seeing The Young Man form Atlanta on Broadway. He strikes me as the master of quiet moments, stillness and pauses. This production utilizes those to create many lovely, bittersweet, heartbreaking moments.

The show plays more comically than I am making it sound. The two and half hours never dragged.

I particularly enjoyed the costumes which seemed rooted in the period, but heightened and stylized.

I don’t know if Broadway is in the market for a Chekhov revival, but this seems ready to go. Of course, The Goodman already has Good Night Oscar and likely Tommy (starts this summer) headed to NY.

The last Cherry Orchard on Broadway was an awful version directed by a British director who was clearly asleep. Poor Diane Lane who could have been great was stuck in a terrible Roundabout production.

Ah, yes. I vaguely remember that now that you mention it.

The Goodman production was very energetic which I didn't quite expect. I am amateur though when it comes to Chekhov. I think my only exposure was a tv version of The Seagull with Rosemary Harris which I saw when I worked at The Paley Center. Of course, Ms. Harris was wonderful.

I think you probably mean Lee Grant in The Seagull. Rosemary Harris did play Arkadina at the Public Theatre, but there is no video (unless there is a TOFT video). Perhaps earlier she played Nina somewhere. Anyway, it's a 1974 Williamstown Theatre Festival production with Grant, Blythe Danner, Frank Langella, Kevin McCarthy, William Swetland, Marian Mercer, Olympia Dukakis and Louis Zorich that is probably the best known English-language television production, along with a BBC production with Zoe Caldwell and Stephen Rea.

Linking the Williamstown production.

Thanks for the report on the Goodman Cherry Orchard. You make it sound very good.

Ah, yes, I was confused. Thank you for the info. I think what was in my mind was Harris in a tv production of Uncle Vanya from 1963.

It's been a good 30 years since I worked at The Paley Center. It was still called The Museum of Broadcasting when I worked there. My first job out of school.

Thanks for the link to the Williamstown production directed by Nikos Psacharopoulos. Brought back memories of the "good old days" of fabulous seasons there.
