| It wouldn't be surprising to hear theatres have refused Mr. McDonagh's most recent play, A Very Very Very Dark Matter, which played at the Bridge in London in 2018 - it came across as a lazy, slipshod first draft from a writer who didn't understand that there's a difference between exposing racist/colonialist attitudes and simply making racist jokes at the expense of the play's one black character. It was a mess, and it didn't work on any level. If anything, the surprise is that the Bridge agreed to produce it. | |

| Billington's review was just about the only completely positive one. Most were at least mixed-to-negative. Here's Henry Hitchings in the Standard: | |

| I also saw some two-star reviews, but most seemed comfortably three stars. In other words, mixed reviews, rather than “it didn’t work at any level.” (I did not see it and cannot weigh in anecdotally.) | |
