| Ok I was emotional just being in the theatre. So this may be very biased - but I loved this production. I loved it visually, I loved the orchestra and I loved the new script. Phillipa Soo’s voice is angelic and her Guinevere was wonderful. Andrew Burnap was great as King Arthur and I felt the honesty of the reluctant king as he has to navigate so much through this story. Matias de la Flor was very good as Lancelot. The show ran 2:50 today so I think it has been trimmed. The second act seemed to go faster than I remembered and I was moved as always by the ending. I was mesmerized by Richard Burton when he was on tour with the show in 1981. He will always be the standard. But this production I enjoyed more than any other I had seen before. |

| I was there today as well. Special kudos to Aaron Sorkin for a new terrific book that feels contemporary yet period at the same time. The three leads (including Understudy de la Flor who had the elaborate sword work down) were fine, and Burnap is better than that. I also loved Dakin Matthews, but he always scores no matter what or how big the role. |

| There were hints in the new script and direction that (wait for it....) Guenevere and Lancelot had known each other in France and possibly even had an affair before both ended up in Camelot. First, although Guenevere, even in the original which I saw, develops a disdain for Lancelot, I never thought it happened immediately upon seeing him show up. In this version, it is an automatic response as though she is trying to hide their history. Second, there is the moment when they are both trying to bring Arthur back to life after the swordfight and they catch each other's eye. Again trying to hide something. Thirdly, when Lancelot is assigned to guard Gunevere over night for the first time, why would he instantly sit within three feet of her in her bedroom instead of standing guard at her door? One other note is that the young boy who plays the young boy who appears in the final scene simply cannot act, sorry to say. He unintentionally ruins the last scene and needs to be replaced. | |
