2023 Leading Actress in a Musical

Slightly premature, but as the season is coming to a close I'm realizing the leading actress race may be the tightest its been in several seasons. To me, it's feeling like a three-way race between Victoria Clark, Micaela Diamond, and Annaleigh Ashford. My vote would go to Micaela, but there are strong arguments for any of the three winning. I also feel like Sara Bareilles' refreshing and revelatory performance will be a lock for a nomination, leaving one slot for Phillipa Soo, Anna Uzele, Lorna Courtney, or one of the many talented women in this crowded season. (Or maybe we end up with a six person category like in 2018.) But the trio I mentioned feel very neck and neck for the award. It'll be exciting to watch!

Diamond does incredible work, but if there’s a Tony that “Kimberly” has a lock on, it’s this one. Clark is giving a performance for the ages, less acting than alchemy.

Bonnie Milligan absolutely OWNS her role in Kimberly Akimbo. I can’t imagine anyone else playing that part. It appears as if it was written for her. So good, so funny.

She is great, but I felt l she was less powerful than she was Off-Broadway. Of the performances I’ve seen so far, I’d be voting for Betsy Wolf.

Clark is so special in Kimberly but I thought Sara Bareilles surpassed her in Into the Woods. It is a shame Tony voters can’t see her performance right now.

Curious- have you seen them all? I've only seen Soo and thought she was lovely.

Still haven’t seen Diamond and Ashford but I have seen all the others.

Based solely on word of mouth, I think it's unlikely Ashford will win in a season with these performances by Clark, Diamond and Bareilles.

There are surprises though. Remember when Idina Menzel beat out Donna Murphy, Tonya Pinkins, and Kristin Chenoweth?

I am not especially good generally at predicting the Tonys, but I remember that win being one that I expected to happen. I do remember it being regarded as a surprise.

I would certainly be surprised if Ashford won this year. There has been some carping about her performance even in favorable reviews of the production. New York has seen a bunch of excellent performances in the role, and hardly anyone seems to feel that Ashford ranks with the best, even if she may get more laughs than anyone else. But, as you say, there are often surprises.

I have now seen all the performances mentioned as likely candidates. I saw Clark at the Atlantic and Bareilles at CC, and although Clark might win, my vote would go for Micaela. And "Parade" for Best Revival and director.

It would be wonderful if they nominate 6 women, because so many are worthy. It really was am embarrassment of riches this season. What I really hope is that investors are seeing returns so they keep investing on these excellent productions. My wager is for Victoria Clark, since that role is on stage the entire show, challenging, and truly masterful in her hands. Micaela is good, and Annaleigh is doing Annaleigh.
