In his N.Y. Stage rave for ''Oliver!'' at Encores!. David Finkle hails ''Lorin Latarro, who choreographs the entire ensemble with buoyant finesse.''
In particular, Finkle cites: ''There’s one number including umbrellas as carriage wheels that’s a true inspiration.''
If he's referring to ''I'd Do Anything,'' the 1968 movie features the boys ''forming'' a carriage and twirling umbrellas as its wheels.
But that would appear to be Onna White's invention, and she got a special Oscar for her ''outstanding choreography'' in ''Oliver!''
I looked at the footage of the original ''I'd Do Anything'' from ''Ed Sullivan,'' but there's no ''carriage'' moment (or wasn't it shown?).
Also, in the highlights reel from Encores!, the cast finishes ''Consider Yourself'' marching in unison, swinging their arms up and down.
That reminds me of the finale of ''Consider Yourself'' in the movie, too. (Or was it in the original 1963 Broadway staging?)
Oddly, neither IBDB nor the Playbill Vault lists a choreographer for ''Oliver!,'' just Peter Coe as director. Did he also do the dances? |
