| ''Movies like Oliver!, WSS, and Chicago competed against non-musical movies when they won the Oscar for best picture.'' True, but the Academy Awards have always been that way and just had one big prize. Except for its first ceremony (1927-28), where its top prizes were ''Outstanding Picture'' and ''Best Unique and Artistic Picture.'' That said, movie musicals, especially today, are anomalies. A movie musical hasn't won Best Picture in 2 decades. The last one to do so: ''Chicago'' in 2003. (And lately, there's been a string of movie musicals that bombed at the box office: ''Cats,'' ''In the Heights,'' ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' even Steven Spielberg's acclaimed revise of ''West Side Story.'') Yet the Golden Globes DO give out Best Drama and Best Comedy/Musical. (From 1959-62, they even gave out separate Comedy and Musical prizes.) The Tonys have a very different history. Since 1949, they've given out Best Musical and Best Play, plus Best Actor and Actress in a Musical, Best Actor and Actress in a Play. If musicals are anomalies in Hollywood, they are the economic lifeblood of Broadway and carry much more weight. ''Plays and Musicals used to compete against each other for the best revival Tony.'' Yes, they did, from 1977-1993. But as more and more revivals popped up, the Tonys set up separate categories for them in 1994. Plays and musicals used to compete against each other for Scenic Design, Costume Design, etc. But musicals usually had an inherent advantage: They generally have many more sets and costumes than plays, so they're flashier. For example, from 1990-2004, musicals won the Tony for Scenic Design 13 out of 15 times. And musicals won Costumes all 15 times. Since 2005, the Tonys divided those categories between plays and musicals. ''I wouldn’t oppose musicals competing with plays.'' And I humbly disagree. I don't think ''Leopoldstadt'' should be competing against ''Kimberly Akimbo'' or ''Some Like It Hot.'' Etc., etc. |
