| Well, the only reason Will Parker has gone to Kansas City is so he can sing a song about it. Truly. Tevye does not seem especially preoccupied with becoming rich, although money certainly figures as an issue in the marriages of Tzeitel and Hodel. But it's hardly a throughline for him, yet he sings a long song about it. I think we can find lots of classic musicals with at least one or two songs that don't seem especially crucial or integrated. We can't really know just how they got to changing The Matchmaker so that the song "Hello, Dolly!" would make sense. Did the song come first or did the change to the backstory come first? Anyway, I think the songs in Oliver! are generally reasonably well integrated. And in addition to what PlayWiz says about "I'd Do Anything," I think we can also consider it a commentary on the class issues that are certainly a theme. I think "Consider Yourself" becoming a big ensemble number is a stretch, but not really the song itself. But that's musicals, at least back in the day. |
