| ''I’ve always thought the point was to delight the audience with an entertaining song.'' As much as I enjoy Jerry Ross and Richard Adler's ''The Pajama Game'' and ''Damn Yankees,'' I must admit ''Steam Heat'' and ''Who's Got the Pain?,'' respectively, have never been my favorites in those shows. Maybe ''Steam Heat'' has the catchier tune of the two. But they don't advance the plot or reveal character, etc. They seem to have existed only to give Bob Fosse a chance to showcase his dancers, which I imagine is as valid as any excuse. Similarly, what's the point of ''Shipoopi'' in ''The Music Man''? To open Act II with a dance number? To give Marcellus a showcase? Among later shows, I've never liked ''Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again'' in ''Phantom.'' I guess Christine just needs a big solo in Act II? |
