| In addition to the above, I think of Gesamkunstwerk as implying total authorial control of the various pieces (words, music, sets, design of theatre etc.) in the way that Wagner did to an extreme degree in Bayreuth. When Green says, "But perhaps we do not need “Oliver!” to be a Gesamtkunstwerk," he seems to be reacting to the mishmash of authorial intentions, and resulting tones, at work in the piece. |
