| I think we can perhaps differentiate numbers like "Steam Heat" and "Oom-Pah-Pah," which are presented as diegetic numbers, with the characters in reality singing and/or dancing, from numbers like "I'd Do Anything," which seems to be musicalized dialogue, although I suppose in this case there is some ambiguity as to whether the characters are supposed to be singing an established song. The latter numbers often seem to be songs that arise from dialogue, but the question is whether in some cases, their relevance or naturalness to the situation is minimal. Of course, no one seems to find Adelaide and the Hot Box Girls' two diegetic numbers in Guys and Dolls to merely be time wasters, even though "Take Back Your Mink" was added out of town and really would be disposable except that it's helpful to have a number there and it's a good number. Also, "Mink" is an example of a first song after intermission that latecomers to act two can miss without losing any important plot points. |
