| Lehman Engel, the Tony-winning conductor/musical director, composer and founder of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop, used to refer to ''charm songs.'' It was a phrase he coined to apply to songs that are just meant to entertain the audience and make them smile. They don't necessarily move the plot. Engel's examples included ''Put on a Happy Face'' from ''Bye Bye Birdie'' and ''Standing on the Corner'' from ''The Most Happy Fella.'' (Does the BMI workshop still teach about ''charm songs''? Or is this an old-fashioned and outdated concept?) Anyway, maybe ''Kansas City'' and ''If I Were a Rich Man'' are charm songs. They offer insight into their character's personality and life philosophy. |
