By the way, I've always been curious about ''Brush Up Your Shakespeare'' from ''Kiss Me, Kate.'' I love it, and Porter's lyrics are a riot.

But do you (or anyone else here) know anything more about the writing of it? What inspired it? Just Porter's genius? It's always tickled me that Porter gives this showstopper to two minor characters, two gangsters who don't even have names. They're only listed in the Playbill as ''First Man'' and ''Second Man.'' I assume they're not highbrow theater nerds. And yet these two guys, with Noo Yawk accents, are reeling off one witty pun after another, based on Shakespeare's plays, including ''Troilus and Cressida.'' These nameless gangsters even ''quote with ease'' references to ''Aeschylus and Euripides.'' The song adds nothing to the plot, but it's just a brilliant vaudevillian turn in the spotlight (with a built-in encore!).
